Search engine optimization, known as SEO in our industry, is a project management strategy to improve domain visibility in query results. Website optimizing revolves around three fundamental developer processes. It all begins with careful selection of copywritten content based on results of descriptive keyword research. That process of discovery identifies search terms or keywords used by people who want a product or service that you have available. Next on a list is careful planning of placement of keywords or key phrases within elements of a page. It would be a task assigned to an SEO copywriter. After content and placement details have been worked out a project then turns to a developer who must accomplish the third task. He must code an entire project to stringent W3C development standards of which I am a strong proponent. After descriptive keywords or key phrases have been determined they then need to be worked into content. This is a process of carefully balancing copywriting content to incorporate descriptive keywords properly. They must form a well balanced ratio relative to secondary items of importance. It has to be worked into page titles, meta keyword tags, meta descriptions tags, and in a right measure of density throughout body text. Optimization processes as a whole become even more difficult because presenting content to help an engine crawling spider “understand” what the topic of a webpage is can be difficult. At times it makes text read like a sales pitch to a human visitor reading it. Often the visitor realizes something doesn't sound right but does not know that the page is catering to the search engine crawler. Balance is critical to ensure accurate indexing so it may be presented as relevant information in query results.

Information gathering crawlers do not have reasoning ability. Crawlers can only interpret logic as they have been programmed to perform. Software developers who write source code for crawlers apply logic to determine how a spider crawls and indexes all data it finds.
